Teachers of the year deserve praise

— Our community needs more teachers such as Angela Johnson and Christina Hamm.

Johnson, who teaches first grade at Irving Elementary, is the Muskogee Public Schools 2013 Teacher of the Year.

Hamm, who teaches second grade at Hilldale Lower Elementary, is the 2013 Hilldale Teacher of the Year.

Johnson has taught at Muskogee Public Schools for 14 years. She spent five years teaching kindergarten at Irving, then five years as reading coach at Cherokee Elementary before returning to Irving four years ago.

“I just love the students here. They’re so loving and caring,” Johnson said. “Every day they greet me with a hug. I see to it that I meet them every morning at the door with a smile and a ‘How are you today?’”

Hamm is in her seventh year at Hilldale and previously taught at Porter for two years and Muskogee for five.

“I believe it’s important to teach to each kid’s uniqueness,” Hamm said. “That’s probably the most challenging thing, and also the most important thing about my work.”

Johnson and Hamm represent the best of the best in their profession.

Their attitude toward teaching our youth bodes well for the future of our community.

We congratulate each for their hard work and dedication in earning the recognition of their districts.
