THE PEOPLE SPEAK – Defending MHS football coach

— Mr. Fuller, I do not know your involvement with Muskogee Public Schools or the Muskogee Rougher football team itself. I would, however, like to give you my opinion on Mr. Blankenship.

First, there are several factors for making “good” seasons, for example, talent, size of school, depth of your program and the other team’s talent. Muskogee High School has a much smaller student body than say Jenks, Owasso, Broken Arrow, Union, and Fayetteville, Ark. Since you are commenting on the head coach, you must have knowledge of what “makes” a good team. It’s easy to look at a scoreboard or the record at the end of the year and judge.

I hope you made these comments after you have met Josh and his other coaches. I, myself, am frustrated at the outcome of the Roughers season, but to blame Josh solely is in my opinion incorrect. Considering the last “coach” we had, Josh is a complete opposite in every aspect. Josh teaches respect, discipline, hard work, teamwork and commitment. I am truly sorry you didn’t see this being taught and displayed at all of the past two years’ games, which I assume since you are a Rougher fan you went to all of the games. Like the game in Fayetteville, Ark., where it was cold and raining, or the one in Putnam where our toes froze off, or the one at Broken Arrow where an unfortunate accident happened and a player was taken off the field, you remember those don’t you? I do, because we were there supporting the Roughers, win or lose every game.

If Josh chooses to leave Muskogee, we have lost a great asset to our community. I didn’t say team, I said community. I hope you have heard him give speeches. I hope you have heard him talk to our boys because I have. Before you ask, yes, I had a senior on this year’s team and we all cried when it was over, coaches, players and parents.
