Legendary Green Bay Packers football coach Vince Lombardi was quoted as saying, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.”
Lombardi, however, coached and lived his life by a different belief — winning isn’t everything, but making the effort to is.
1 Corinthians 9:24 tells us, “know you not that they who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? So run, that you may obtain.”
Former New York Jets coach Herm Edwards said, “You play to win the game.”
There are so many other things that can come from healthy competition other than winning.
Charity Pickup, who competed in the Special Olympics Cherokee County Area Aquatics meet recently, teaches us there are more important things than who carries home the trophy.
Charity helped Oklahoma School for the Blind teammate Jacob Morgan finish his lap.
Charity stroked Jacob’s head and talked him through his lap.
“I know he could do it,” said Charity, a sophomore from Jenks. “He just needed motivation. I talked to him and told him what strokes to take. He’s also one of my teammates.
“Seeing him touch that wall gave me a sense of accomplishment and made me so happy.”
That’s a true winning attitude.
