Believe in your possibilities

— Anyone who wonders if he or she  can have an impact on the world should read about Sherrill Garrett.

Anyone who wonders if it is possible to make a positive from tragedy should learn about Garrett.

Sherrill lost her son Jacob to Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Syndrome last May.

From that horrible day, Sherrill has proven that everyone can make a positive impact.

Sherrill has four of her husband Joe’s daughters who will some day need dresses for homecomings, proms and dances.

She started a charity named “Dresses for Jake’s Dates.”

She accepts donated prom dresses to give girls the chance to attend prom all dolled up and give parents a financial break.

“Every girl deserves to feel like a princess for one night,” she said. “And every parent deserves to take a breath and not worry about the cost of things every once in a while.

“You’re paying hundreds of dollars for a dress that’s worn once and then sits in a closet forever. It can get costly and expensive.”

Sherrill’s story appeared in the Phoenix and was picked up by several websites throughout the nation.

Her charity was featured on national television shows.

The Facebook page dedicated to “Dresses for Jake’s Dates” went from 500 likes to more than 18,000 in just a few days.

She has been inundated with promises to send dresses.

Others have been inspired by her story and are offering to help their people in their communities.

Sherrill’s story comes from terrible loss, but grows into a beautiful story of how one person can make an impact on the world.
