Legislators should find solution fast

— Legislators piddle around while the average U.S. citizen teeters dangerously close to the edge of the fiscal cliff.

With just days before taxpayers will be thrown over the cliff, legislators seem to be far apart on a compromise to avoid across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts that threaten the economy.

We say compromise because that is what this nation needs.

That is how politics works best.

Instead, two parties are waging war with our futures in an attempt to win another election.

Both parties should have skipped their holiday breaks and stayed hard at negotiations until a compromise solution survived.

Instead, both parties are trying for an out-and-out win.

Neither side feels it can come to the table with any real compromise first.

They feel that would be interpreted as a sign of weakness that would affect their party’s chances during the next round of elections.

While they posture for their party’s faithful, we all stare into the abyss.

The nation is nervous.

Yet, those who can calm our fears seem more interested in being the side that wins.

In a two-party system, there are never any sustained clear winners.

Power is exchanged in our nation’s capital nearly every election. The political power pendulum swings back and forth like a blade dropping nearer and nearer to our heads.

Get back to work.

Find a compromise.

Politicians don’t want to seek a short-term solution — the kicking of the can down the road.

If legislators can’t find a viable compromise, voters should kick all their cans to the curb in the next election.
