THE MUSKOGEE Fire Department, from January through June 2012, is experiencing a large turnover of 18 firefighters due to retirements. All are in a leadership role of Captain or above. These firefighters have served the citizens of Muskogee with over 576.8 years of combined experience and a collective average of 32 years. This makes for exciting and challenging times for the fire department.
I have known these firefighters for many years and they have served the community with leadership and honor. It takes a special person to risk their lives to run into danger, save or help a total stranger and see the mortality, the hurting, pain and loss as seen through a firefighter’s eyes.
There are not many situations in life that can compare to the variety of emotions of our jobs. The decision to retire is difficult and after 30 plus years on the job will be a new experience.
It has been an honor to work, play, and share the camaraderie in the midst of our careers and firestorms. I wish all the best of retirements and thank you for your service.
Derek Tatum,
Fire Chief
City of Muskogee
