Sentimental Journey brilliant idea

Helping terminally ill patients make one last visit is a wonderful gift.

Patients who are hospitalized, at home, or in hospice care are eligible for the program through Muskogee County Emergency Medical Service.

MCEMS thought it was a great way to give back to the community, said Rebecca Smith, public relations officer.

“Our community is so good to us, and we feel like we really have a partnership with Muskogee County,” Smith said. “And we want to give back as much as we can.”

The service is free and is paid for through donations, Smith said.

Any hospital or hospice agency can refer somebody for the program. There is a process to apply, and not every patient will be able to participate, Smith said.

Trips should be within 50 miles of Muskogee, though requests for longer trips will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

There are limitations, depending on the medical care needed, medication needed and more, but each referral will be reviewed and considered.

The idea is both brilliant and compassionate.

When patients can leave their primary care location and visit family or friends or travel and see their home, it makes their last days just a bit more tolerable.

The idea should help patients and family.

Sentimental Journey deserves the community’s support.
