Don’t drink and drive

Having a good time is not worth risking lives.

That’s the lesson that anyone who has heard the tale of Dallas Cowboys football player Josh Brent’s weekend should understand.

Brent faces intoxicated manslaughter charges after a one-vehicle accident early Saturday morning left teammate and dear friend Jerry Brown dead.

Brent’s Cowboys played the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Brent was scheduled to start that game.

Instead, he was in an Irving, Texas, jail awaiting his release on $500,000 bond.

Brown was a practice squad player. He was paid by the Cowboys, but did not play in games.

Brown’s funeral is Saturday.

This was a tragedy, pure and simple.

Not because two football players are lost to their team, but because a life was taken — and for no good reason, pure and simple.

If the reports of the accident are correct, then Brent was intoxicated when he wrecked his car.

Whether Brent is convicted of any charges or serves any time in prison remains to be seen.

But, if Brent and Brown had taken a cab, chances are none of this would have happened.

We are not advocating that people should not drink.

We are only saying don’t drink and drive.

Don’t get behind the wheel if you have been drinking to excess.

You are risking not just your life, but the life of your friends or someone else.

It’s not worth it.
