It is with great interest I read your article on renaming Robison Park in the June 27 issue of the online Muskogee Phoenix. Is this the same park that was once called “Sallie” Park? If the people of Muskogee are squabbling over a name other than Sallie, they are doing a grave injustice to an 11-year-old that died after being hit by a line drive when pitching batting practice for his team, and the team my brother played on, Nelson Furniture, in June 1955.
This was in the days before batting helmets and it is believed that Bobbie’s tragic death gave impetus to the use of batting helmets and eventually was adopted by all leagues nationally. Bobbie was our neighbor on Garland Street and was a real sweet kid who loved playing baseball.
I plead with the citizens of Muskogee please remember Bobbie Sallie by keeping the Sallie name, or renaming Robison Park, Sallie Park. If the park is to be memorialized by someone’s name, let it be the name of a youngster who paid the ultimate price, his life.
