Edith Lois Carmon

1932 - 2009

Edith Lois Carmon died at her home in Yukon, OK surrounded by her family on November 14, 2009 after a long, dignified and courageous battle with COPD and congestive heart failure.

Edith was the youngest of three children born to Duward Belmont and Hazel Florence (Davis) Dawson on August 9, 1932, in Yates, New Mexico. While born in the “Land of Enchantment,” Edith always considered Oklahoma her home. Her parents moved to Walters, OK when she was a small child. As a teenager she moved to Oklahoma City, residing there much of her adult life before moving to Porum, OK where she and her husband resided for 27 years until his death in October 2000.

Edith loved living in the small community of Porum, where she and her husband Bill raised horses and she practiced her art of cooking both in the home and at Cowgirls Drive-Inn where she was “the cook” for 16 years. She retired from that position to care for her ailing husband.

Edith left her many wonderful friends in Porum in 2001 and relocated to Surprise, AZ, to the retirement community of Happy Trails Resort. While living in the resort she was offered employment as a security officer. As was typical of Edith she soon knew everyone who came through the security gates. She treasured the many special and lasting friendships she made while living in Surprise.

On January 13, 2002, Edith made the decision that would determine her eternal home. Recognizing her need of a Savior, Edith placed her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. In proclaiming Him as her Lord she followed in the obedience of baptism and became a member of Palm Vista Baptist Church, Surprise. AZ.

In June 2005 Edith moved with her daughter and son-in-law to Chester, WV. She spent her days growing beautiful vegetable gardens, mowing the acreage on her John Deere and working complicated jig-saw puzzles – she even got in a little fishing. As was typical of Edith she developed special bonds with folks and was a member of First Baptist Church Chester, WV.

As much as she enjoyed the various places that she lived, her heart’s desire was always to go back home to Oklahoma. In November of 2008 her desire was granted and she and her family moved to Yukon.

Edith was a no nonsense-plain spoken woman. She had many passions in her life. She was a wonderful cook, her family looked forward to Saturday mornings and her famous “biscuits and gravy”. She had a “green thumb” and could grow a beautiful garden-”no flowers” she would say, “you can’t eat flowers”. She was a lover of horses and she and her husband raised many. In her spare time, you could find her down at the creek fishing or playing bingo. Happiness really was yelling “BINGO”. She also loved a challenge-the more complicated the jig-saw puzzle the better!

Edith was most proud of her family. She was known as “Momma” to her only child, daughter; Debbie (Al) Cronin of the home; two step-children; Paul Carmon - Vaughn, WA and Dee Luso - Chico, CA. To her treasured two grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren she was simply known as “Granny”, grandchildren are: Steven (Kris) Oakley, Oakland, CA, and Taylor Alyse Cronin of the home. Step-grandchildren; Lindsey Cronin-Spedding, Mesa, AZ; Natasha Burt and David Carmon, Lakewood, WA; Catherine Carmon, Checotah, OK; Melissa Carmon, Muskogee, OK; and Joe, Patrick, Jenny, and Mary Harding of Sacramento, CA. She was GG (Great Grandma) to three beautiful great grandchildren, Madison, Alexander and Grace Oakley of Oakland, CA. She was called “Toots” by her loving and loyal little sister Faye (Bud) Murdock, Chico, TX and a larger extended family. All her friends simply knew her as Edith and all would agree she was loyal, trustworthy and had an amazing work ethic.

To God, she is known as His child. While she will be missed by all those who knew and loved her we have assurance we will see her again (John 11:25-26). Edith is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, three brothers, Archie, Gayle and Shirel Fisher and one sister Margie Unbehant.

Burial will be in “Okie soil” next to her husband at Fields Cemetery, Porum, OK with a Celebration of Life Memorial to be held in Porum on a date to be announced.

The family wishes to thank the employees of Loving Care Hospice who truly did show “loving care”. We appreciate both the physical and spiritual support so graciously provided by Diane, June, Paula, Nita, Christy, Marilyn, Becky, Bob and Janet. We are grateful to the extended staff as well, those who were always “on call” for Mom and this family.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to your favorite charity in her honor.
