Leon T. Davis

1922 – 2012

Leon T. Davis, 90, of Muskogee, died Friday, December 14, 2012 at Grace Living Center.  He was born in Los Angeles California, on March 3, 1922 to Clarence A. and Florence (Robinson) Davis.

In 1936, Leon moved to Springfield, Colorado and then in 1939 he moved to Bristow, Oklahoma.  Leon was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and rose to the rank of Eagle Scout.  On September 16, 1941, Leon joined the Marine Corps.  He served during World War II until November 8, 1945.

While living in Los Angeles, Leon attended the Wilshire School of Photography on the GI Bill. Later, he worked at a steel mill in Maywood, California. He moved to Bristow and opened Davis Studio and Camera Shop where he worked until his retirement in 1971.

He was the Civil Defense Director for the city of Bristow for fifteen years, Assistant Civil Defense Director for Creek County for 15 years, served as Fire Chief for Creek County Rural Civil Defense Fire Dept. and was an American Red Cross board member.  Leon served as Mayor and Municipal Judge for the City of Bristow.  In 1967, he was president of the Oklahoma Civil Defense Director Association, Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year”, first VFW All American Post Commander in Oklahoma and Outstanding District Commander.  He was appointed VFW Accredited State Service Officer, built the VFW War Memorial City Park in Bristow and the Wake Island National War Memorial and was the Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year” in 1978.  In 1991 he built a U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial at Haine , Alaska.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents and trusted employee, Anna Woodall.  He is survived by two cousins, Patricia Wickham and Louise Cook and friends, Beverly Riccius, Phyllis Woodhall Hostetler, Judy Bruton and Jack McCall.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 20, 2012 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Mr. Bill Crow officiating.
