Frank Marion Slay, age 97, passed from this life on Jan. 19, 2013, in Roland OK. He was born on June 13, 1915 in Havana, AR to his parents, Francis Marion and Alice Slay.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, and his lifelong spouse, Ottie Apple Slay.
He is survived by two children, four grand-children and eight great-grandchildren. Those being his daughter Connie Joyce Gibson and husband, Jim Gibson of Muskogee OK, Linda Katherine Smith and husband, Larry Smith of Roland OK. Grandchildren, Cathy Hook and husband, Jamie Hook of Edmund OK, Kelley Aylor, and husband, Brad Aylor of Owasso OK, Lance Smith and wife, Lacy of Roland OK and Les Smith, and wife, Monica of Ft. Smith, AR. His great grandchildren being Logan, Landon, and Cameron Smith, Mason Hook and Micah Hook, and Addison, Andrew, and Austen Aylor.
Frank grew up in the foothills of Mt. Magazine and went to school in Havana where he played sports, and grew to love football. One of his best friends in school who he kept in touch with was Johnny Sain, former long-time Major League pitcher and coach with the Yankees and Tigers. He received his degree from Chillicothe Business College in Mo. After that he joined Sears Roebuck & Co., and worked across the Midwest part of the country as a farm store manager for many years until his first retirement. Later he and his wife opened a Montgomery Ward mail order catalog store in Booneville, which they ran for several years. He was also a Freemason. Frank never met a stranger, lived a full life, and loved the simple things of life such as fishing, gardening, raising catfish, and following the Razorbacks and Cowboys.
He was Mayor of the town of Blue Mtn for several years and served as President of the Ark Municipal League during the Clinton era. Further, His love for Mt. Magazine lead him to be among the first to promote the rebuilding of the Lodge, which became a reality much to his delight.
Graveside Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Havana Cemetery in Yell County under the direction of Fentress Mortuary in Fort Smith.
Pallbearers will be Lance & Les Smith, Brad Aylor and Jamie Hook.
