Veda Marie Grimmett West

1949 - 2012

— Veda Marie Grimmett West, 63, of Muskogee, Oklahoma passed away on August 8, 2012 at St. John’s Hospital.  Veda was born March 18, 1949 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to Harold (Pete) and Marie Grimmett.  She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Muskogee and graduated from Liberty Morris High School in 1967.  She furthered her education by attending Connors State College, East Central State College, and Northeastern State University. Veda married Waylon West on January 18, 1969, and they resided in Muskogee where Veda was a school teacher at Hilldale Elementary.  She retired in May of 2012 year after teaching for 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her father, Pete Grimmett in December of 2005; her twin sister who died at birth; and her brother-in-law, Mark Spillar who passed in September 2011.

Veda is survived by her husband Waylon of the home; daughter, Melinda West of Broken Arrow, OK.; mother, Marie Grimmett of Bald Hill, OK.; sisters, Sandy Turney and husband of Bald Hill, OK., and Pam Spillar of Pensacola, FL.; four nieces; two nephews; numerous great nieces and nephews; father-in-law and mother-in-law of 43 years, Elzy and Ruby West of Sallisaw, OK.; brother-in-law Roger West of Sallisaw, OK.; and a host of other family and friends.  

Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, August 13, 2012 at Cornerstone Funeral Home, 1830 North York St., Muskogee, OK.  

Funeral services will be 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at Cornerstone Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Mike Kennedy officiating.
