Willie (Vyce) Garrett

1916 - 2012

Willie (Vyce) Garrett departed this life in his ninety-sixth year of life on October 22, 2012 at Jack C. Montgomery VAMC in Muskogee, OK.

Vyce was born in Sachahachi, AR on August 13, 1916, to James and Mattie Weatheral Garrett. He attended school in Oklahoma. After leaving school he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving three years, receiving a honorable discharge. After his discharge, Vyce returned to the family farm in Tullahassee, OK. Vyce never married but he did keep close ties with Ruth Jones throughout his adult life. Vyce spent many years in construction building roads, bridges, and dams all over the United States. Professing his love for the Lord, he attended church, never losing his faith in God.

Vyce is survived by Evelyn (Walter) Forte, Pola Ford, Rev. Charles and Nellie Benton, Edna M. Robertson, Hurthon Wallace, Hulin Wallace, Ardella Waters, William Moore, Donna Ray, Norma Jean, Artis, Dennis, Helen and Jean. His extended family including two young men he raised, Christopher D. Jones and Robert Moore. His foster daughters, Evangelist Louise L. Lewis, Doris, Brenda and Debra Jones, foster sons, Thurman (Margaret) Jones, Bruce Jones and Julius  Jones (deceased) and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren. Dedicated caregivers, RayElla Newton, Herman Brown, Anitra Jones, Sherry Gardenhire, Senetha Moore, Bobby (Cathy) Foreman, Charles (Lanita) Moore (deceased) and Bertha Harlin. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mattie Garrett, James Garrett, Jr., Mattie B., Georgie, Jimmie Lee and Beather Lee.

The homegoing celebration service for Willie will be on Saturday, October 27, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Tullahassee with Rev. Nelson Ross, officiating. He will be laid to rest with military honors in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Visitation hours are today from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Services are under the direction of Ragsdale Funeral Center.
