Frank Matthew Medearis was born March 11, 1967 to Robert P. (Bob) and Martha Medearis in Tahlequah, OK and died January 12, 2013 at his home in Muskogee, OK. He was a 1985 graduate of Tahlequah High School, a 1989 graduate of Northeastern State University, and a 1992 graduate of Tulsa University Law School.
He began his career practicing law with his brother Park, a Tahlequah attorney. His career of public service began as an Assistant District Attorney for Cherokee, Wagoner and Adair Counties, and subsequently as a Staff Attorney for Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Trustee in Muskogee. He also served as a staff attorney for Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma and as the City Attorney for Muskogee.
Frank was always active in civic and charitable works. At the age of sixteen he was the only male allowed to enter and assist battered women and their children in Tahlequah’s Help In Crisis center. Fourteen years later, he became the first male Chairman of the Board of Help In Crisis. He was past President of Muskogee Education Foundation, a Kid’s Space Child Advocacy Board Member, the Past President of the Lake Area United Way, a Member of the Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee, and a Member of the Muskogee Non-Profit Resource Center Board. As a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Frank regularly prepared and served meals there for the less fortunate. Additionally, he was a Meals on Wheels volunteer and taught literacy at Muskogee Public Library. His fellow members of Muskogee Country Club smiled and laughed with him when he described himself as “cute and fun.” Frank exuberantly served Muskogee Little Theater on the Play Selection Committee and on the stage. Frank was a natural actor and modestly but regularly proclaimed his greatest role as Sylvia St. Croix in Ruthless because after all, “I’m the pretty one.”
Frank was preceded in death by his father Bob Medearis, a Tahlequah businessman and state legislator; and his brother John. His survivors include his partner Joel Cousins; his mother Martha Medearis; his sister Suzanne Hathaway (Bob); his brother Park Medearis (Sandy) all of Tahlequah; his niece Carly Cockman of Tulsa; his niece LeAnn Davis (Gary) and nephews Robert, Jack, Jacob, Jarod, William, and James Medearis all of Tahlequah; Joel’s son Grant Cousins (Danyel) and their daughters Lauren and Grace of Tulsa; Joel’s daughter CiCi Cousins of Albuquerque; and his sister and brother-in-law Sally (Cousins) and Torch Elliott of Park City, Utah.
Services will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church at 2130 West Okmulgee, Muskogee, OK officiated by Grace Episcopal’s The Reverend Bob Wickizer and St. Paul’s The Reverend Mark Jardine on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 3:00 p.m.
