Billie J. “Bill” Baxter

1923 - 2012

— Billie Joe Baxter, loving husband, father, and grandfather went to be with his heavenly Father on June 16, 2012. Billie was born to Marley and Jewel Baxter on March 19, 1923 in Aurora, MO, and the family moved to Muskogee when Billie was very young.

The highlight of Billie’s life was marrying his high school sweetheart, Christine Stewart. They shared 71 years of marriage and were blessed with two daughters, Janet and Charlotte. Billie loved outings with his family and they spent much time at the lake water skiing, roller skating, and taking vacations. Billie loved to sing and entertain his children with silly songs he made up. Until his health failed, you would hear him singing and whistling much of the time.

He attended Central High School where at 5 ft. 6 in. and 136 pounds, he was a line-man for The Muskogee Roughers. Two of his fondest memories were playing in the 1940 state high school football championship game, and being on the team that was the first-ever to play in the Indian Bowl. He also ran track and lettered in that field as well. After high school, Billie went to work for O.G.&E., and after 40 years of service he retired. He was a devoted Christian, he helped establish Southeast Baptist Church where he was a member for over 50 years, and would lead the singing anytime he could get a chance.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. He is survived by his wife, Christine Baxter; daughters, Janet Robinson Thornton, her husband, Buck, of Muskogee, and Charlotte Brown, her husband, Paul, of Tulsa; seven grandchildren, Bret Robinson, Bart Robinson, Kelly Robinson, Darren Hoog, Damon Hoog, Kristi Musselman, and Jason Brown; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Billie was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed by all.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at Southeast Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery under the direction of Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home of Muskogee.
