Nanabel Blankenship Porter, 95, died Monday, January 17, 2011. She was born in Cartersville, Oklahoma on January 25, 1915 to Curtis and Mattie Blankenship.
Nanabel attended Oklahoma State University and Northeastern State Teacher’s College (now Northeastern State University, Tahlequah) with a focus on art. She was a member of Sans Souci and Tri Sigma.
Nanabel was the beloved wife for forty-nine years of the late John W. Porter, Jr.; mother of Nita Porter Emrick (wife of George W. Emrick) of New Orleans, John W. Porter, III (deceased) and Mary Jane Porter of Tulsa.
Nanabel and her family were members of the First Presbyterian Church, where they were very involved in the ‘life’ of the church. Nanabel was especially active in the Afternoon Circle. She also gave a lot of herself to the Girl and Boy Scouts as a Troup and Camp Leader. She retired after twenty two years as Secretary in the U.S. Attorney’s Office. She was active in the Muskogee Art Guild and frequently displayed her art at various sites around Muskogee.
The family appreciates the care and love given to her at Magnolia Gardens Assisted Living where she last resided. She was a loving wife, mother and friend and will be missed by many whose lives she touched with her sweet spirit.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 500 W. Broadway in Muskogee.
