Mary Ellen Johnson Bowers

1935 - 2013

— Mary Ellen Johnson Bowers, 77, of Muskogee, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2013. She was born March 5, 1935 in Fitzhugh, Oklahoma to James Dutch Henley and Lyda May Lacy Henley; one of seventeen children. Mary married Hubert Joe Johnson on February 21, 1953 in Paris, Texas, and they had three children. Hubert preceded Mary in death on June 10, 1980.

Mary married Bill Bowers on August 6, 1985 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Bill preceded her in death on June 3, 2012.

She worked for Pete’s Cardinal Grocery Store, Weddle’s Grocery Store, Cedars Nursing Home, and I00F Odd Fellows Home, from which she retired in 1994. Mary was a member of the Church of Christ and also the Checotah Rebekah Lodge 12. She volunteered for Home Health, Hospice, Meals on Wheels, and nursing homes.

Mary was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Hubert Johnson; her second husband, Bill Bowers;  her son, Greg Johnson; parents, James and Lyda Henley; her siblings, Margie Cartmill, Ruby Robertson, Joann Powell, Joyce Henley, Alice Henley, Eddie Henley, and baby boy Henley.

She is survived by her daughters, Debbie Bennett and husband Mickie, Darla Gage and husband Homer; grandchildren, Mikki Jo Taylor (Bennett), Stephanie Wallis, Cody Gage, Samantha Lawson, and Jake Gage; great grandchildren, Ben Johnson and Alayna Thomas; siblings, J.D. Henley, Curtis Henley, Freda Caldwell, Jimmie Henley, Violet Stewart, Larry Henley, Tommy Henley, Patty Owens, and Troy Henley.

Graveside service for Mary will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Greenlawn Cemetery in Checotah, Oklahoma with Everett Dunn officiating.  

Funeral services are under the direction of Cornerstone Funeral Home and Crematory, 1830 North York Street, Muskogee, Oklahoma.
