Kerney Carter

1940 - 2012

Kerney Carter was born on August 12, 1940 in Muskogee, OK, to Roy Lee and Johnnie Breshears Carter. He passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at the V.A. Hospital in Muskogee with his family nearby. He was 72 years old. Kerney was the youngest of six children, and lived with his family on a farm in southeast Muskogee. He attended Sallie Brown, Alice Robertson, and finally Central High School, where he excelled as a Muskogee Rougher baseball pitcher.

He enlisted in the U. S. Army after high school, after learning he was too young to join the Police Dept. He was stationed in Korea, Japan, and Vietnam where he was active combat and received the Bronze Star. He also was stationed in NY and VA as a Military Police officer, and served, and often reminisced, about his MP days at West Point, and particularly of the year he was selected to provide security for the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. It was during his service in Washington DC that he met, and later married the love of his life, Doris Davis Carter.

After the service, Kerney joined the Muskogee Police Dept. and was selected as Policeman of the Year in 1969 after his first year. He went on to serve Muskogee and the MPD for over 26 years before retiring as a Lieutenant and earning numerous awards, including the Purple Heart. Even today, he is still referred to as Lt. Carter.

Kerney is survived by Doris, his wife of 47 years; son, Michael and his wife, Janet, and their twin children, Noah and Ashlyn of Lake Jackson, TX; daughter, Debbie Young and her twin children, Aaron and Corey of Muskogee, OK; brothers, Roy Carter of Shawnee, R. B. Breshears of Tahlequah; sister, Alice Ray of Muskogee; sisters and brothers-in-law, Iva Lee and Bud Groves of Midland, VA, Mildred Blankenship of Ranlo, NC, Willene and Robert Wagoner, Faye and Sidney Holcombe all of Gastonia, NC, and Frone Davis of SC.

Kerney is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Francis; sister, Jennie and her husband, Glenn Harrison; brothers and sisters-in-law, Annuella Carter, Mae Breshears, Walter Davis, Reverend Mitchell and Annie Mae Davis, Ellie and Leonard Lowe, Marie and Terry Harrison, Hattie and Elisha Elliot; father and mother-in-law, Willis and Minnie Davis.

The funeral will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Tom Shelton officiating. Pallbearers are Luke Abel, Chuck Albin, Bert Poole, Tim Gibson, BIll Gibson and Todd Whitman. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery with honors provided by Muskogee Police Honor Guard and the American Legion Honor Guard.

The family suggests memorials in honor of Kerney be made to the Disabled American Veterans or the Muskogee Veterans Administration Hospital.
