Tress “Marie” (Beckley) Dykes-Story

1924 – 2012

— Marie Dykes Story, 88, of Muskogee, died Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at Cherokee Nursing Home in Tahlequah. Marie was born July 9, 1924, in rural Colorado, of Cherokee, English and Scot nationalities. Her parents were Joe Burnett and Margaret (Wann) Beckley. Marie’s maternal grandparents were Rosalee Lynch and R.K. Wann and her paternal grandparents were Locey and Issac Newton Beckley. Marie’s Cherokee clan is the Bird clan. She was related to the Adairs, Emorys, Martins, McDaniels, Harnages, Sequoyah, Will Rogers, W.W. Keeler, the Grants, Davis’, Thompsons, Fields, Busheyheads, and Sanders. Gilcrease Museum houses the portrait of Conneshoate, the Peace Chief of the Cherokee Nation. His portrait was painted in England in 1776.

Marie attended school in Collinsville, Oklahoma where she met her future husband, Jesse Pat Dykes. She and Jesse graduated from Collinsville High School. The couple married in 1943. Jesse preceded her in death in 1970. Marie attended Oklahoma State University and Northeastern State University graduating with an Education degree. In 1970, she began her career teaching at Whittier Elementary School. She retired from teaching in 1986.

In 1974, Marie married Tony Story who preceded her in death on October 21, 2000. Marie was a member of the Methodist church. She was penned for 50 years as Worthy Matron of Eastern Star.  Marie was the youngest worthy Matron for Oklahoma. Marie was a member of the Oklahoma Education Association and the Muskogee Education Association.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Byron W. and Linda Dykes; daughter, Patsy Dykes Brickey; grandchildren, Wayne Dykes, Jr., Darrell Lee Dykes, Douglas  Dykes, Michael Dykes, Kristi Haney, Jeramy P. Brickey, Jessica L. Brickey and Jonathan K. Brickey; sister, Dr. Jody Beckley Charter; great-grandchildren, Clay Brickey, Sean Brickey, Madison Brickey, Justus Haney and Jaden Haney.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 12, 2012 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Pastor Ed Hyslope officiating.
