Sarah Lee (McElroy) Vaughn 1925 - 2013

— Sarah Lee (McElroy) Vaughn entered this world on May 14, 1925 in Haskell, Oklahoma. Sarah lived with her grandfather, Samuel Langhorn, until his death. After that, she resided at DB&O (Deaf, Blind, and Orphan), a state run orphanage in Taft, Oklahoma, until she was adopted by the late Katie and Henry McElroy in 1932. Following a long and courageous battle with dementia, eighty-seven years later, the Lord called Sarah to her new home. On January 21, 2013, Sarah heeded the call and willingly and peacefully transitioned from the Bedford Court Health Care Center Nursing Home in Silver Spring, Maryland, to her new home, eternal in the Heavens.

Sarah gave her life to Christ at an early age and united with the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Sarah was a World War II Bomber girl who helped build deployed aircraft during WWII, an unusual feat for a Negro during that era. Sarah’s beauty, warmth, and kindness drew admirers from all walks of life. Sarah will forever be remembered for her loving nature and quite smile, and caring and loving her family and her dog, Lightning.

Sarah’s husband, Leo Vaughn, Sr. of sixty-five years, preceded her in death in 2009. Also preceding her in death was her daughter, Kaaron Vaughn in 2006; her granddaughter LaTreece Lowless and great grandson Leo Vaughn IV, her stepfather, Edward Corbin, her sister, Rosa Lee (Smith) Marshall, and brother, Lincoln Smith.

Sarah leaves to cherish her memories her sons, Leo Vaughn, Jr., Scott Anthony Vaughn, and Oliver Douglass Vaughn of Muskogee, Oklahoma; and daughters, Demetta Jo Vaughn of Muskogee, and Toian Vaughn and Gina Lollo Vaughn of Brookeville, Maryland; eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, her sister-in law Jewel Vaughn, of Muskogee, and other relatives and friends, particularly longtime friends, Gaynell Reed and Sarah (Mansfield) White.

A service of memory will be conducted Monday, February 4, 2013, 11:00 a.m., Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel, Muskogee, OK; with Rev. Gary Hall, eulogizing.

Visitation will be Sunday, 3 - 6 p.m. at Granger Colonial Chapel.

Online condolence and registry may be expressed at www.houseofwinn.com

The family has been cared for by the Winn family at Granger-House of Winn Funeral Home
