Federal stimulus dollars have boosted efforts of local community service organizations to expand programs to help limited-income residents move toward self-sufficiency.
Muskogee County Community Action Foundation created a social service outreach position. The staff provides outreach into the smaller communities in the agency’s service areas. They distribute food baskets to income eligible families as a way of addressing the symptoms of poverty. In addition, they distribute literature about other programs offered by the agency, including senior nutrition.
Community Action Agencies are non-profit, community-based and governed organizations. They provide cost-effective programs to meet the needs of families including asset development, early childhood, emergency assistance, employment, housing, nutrition, prescription assistance, senior volunteer, transit and weatherization programs.
The Oklahoma Department of Commerce distributes the stimulus funds to the community action network.
