The Muscogee Creek Indian Freedmen Band Association will present the history and genealogy of the freedmen and their descendants at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Bacone College’s Wacoche Hall.
Association President Ron Graham, a genealogist, will present the lecture.
The freedmen were formerly held as slaves by members of the Five Civilized Tribes. After the Civil War, federal treaties with the tribes granted the former slaves rights as tribal citizens.
Those rights as they relate to the freedmen’s descendant are part of an ongoing debate that is being litigated by the Cherokee Nation. Graham said anyone who attends the meeting would “gain a vast amount of knowledge concerning the freedmen issue.”
