P.M. UPDATE: Tahlequah residency program receives award

— Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis recognized the Tahlequah Hospital Foundation at OSU’s Medallion Ceremony held in Tulsa earlier this month. The Foundation was recognized for the Internal Medicine and Family Practice Residency Programs established with Tahlequah City Hospital and Cherokee Nation Health Services.

Through a partnership with the Cherokee Nation, residents at Tahlequah City Hospital are given a unique opportunity to learn from a wide variety of specialists not commonly found in rural healthcare settings. Through rotations at Tahlequah City Hospital and Cherokee Nation’s W.W. Hastings Indian Hospital, residents are exposed to diverse and complex cases, offering them a vast amount of experience to begin their medical career.

Tahlequah City Hospital’s collaboration with Oklahoma State University began in 2008 when the Tahlequah Hospital Foundation entered into an endowment agreement with the OSU Foundation. From this agreement, Dr. Doug Nolan was selected to oversee a Family Medicine Residency Program. In 2009, the program began with only one resident. Just one year later, the program contained a total of nine residents.

By 2011, the Family Practice Residency Program was recognized for its success and a second residency program in Internal Medicine was awarded. This Internal Medicine Program is directed by one of the leading Internists in the field, Dr. John Galdamez. Today, 14 residents are training in Tahlequah through these two programs.
