Former Cherokee reserve deputy receives prison term in gun theft

— A Tahlequah man was sentenced to more than two years in federal prison, according to a media release from the United States Attorney’s Office.

Mark Allen Cummins Jr. was sentenced to 27 months in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release for possession of stolen firearms. He also was ordered to pay $3,600 restitution to the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service.

Cummins, 33, was charged March 16, 2011, and pleaded guilty in April 2011.

The indictment alleged that on or about June 1, 2010, to on approximately Dec. 21, 2010, Cummins knowingly “possessed, concealed, stored, bartered, sold and disposed of stolen firearms that he had taken from the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service where he was employed as a reserve deputy.”

Cummins will remain in custody pending transportation to the designated federal prison  where he will serve his nonparolable sentence.
