Benefit planned for tumor patient

Church organizing Sunday cookout, other activities

— New Hope Assembly of God pastor John Overton said hosting a fundraiser for a local girl battling a brain tumor is just something his church “needed to do.”

The event, “Freedom has a Name — Brooke Sides,” is set for 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Honor Heights Park.

“We’re just taking the freedom that people — whether it be our soldiers or forefathers — gave of themselves and we in turn are going to do what we can to extend that freedom on to those who are in need,” Overton said.

Brooke Sides, a 12-year-old Hilldale student, just received her 30th radiation treatment for a brain tumor, Overton said.

All expenses will go to the Sides family to help with costs related to Brooke’s treatment.

Overton said the cookout will feature hamburgers, hot dogs, inflatable jumping houses — one wet and one dry — horseshoes and volleyball. The cost is $5 per person or $20 for families of four or more.

“We’re trying to make it as inexpensive as possible,” Overton said. “The whole family can go eat for $20.”

Snow cones also will be available for $1.

The Christian Motorcycle Association also will ride in for the event, Overton said.
