Details on Potts slaying brought to light

Woman says friend poured acid, lye on body

— TAHLEQUAH — An affidavit filed during the investigation of a Hulbert man’s death this month reveals new details about the case.

Cherokee County sheriff’s investigators and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation arrested Misty Coleen Richardson, 38, of Hulbert on June 14 after she allegedly admitted she shot and killed Herbert Lee Potts earlier this year.

Richardson remains in  the Cherokee County Detention Center without bond on a first-degree murder complaint. Charges have not been filed.

According to an affidavit filed for a search warrant of Richardson’s property June 14, Richardson told investigators she used a .22-caliber gun to shoot Potts during a confrontation in her front yard. She also allegedly told investigators she had help from a friend in burying Potts’ body in a rock pile west of her travel trailer.

Richardson, according to investigators, said her friend poured muriatic acid and lye on Potts’ body, and that Richardson burned her clothes and muriatic-acid bottle in a burn pile east of her trailer.

Richardson took investigators to the site, near Lost City, where police say they found clothes and human remains wrapped in a multicolored comforter. During a search of the property, they also seized dozens of prescription pills belonging to Richardson, and dozens of assorted bullets.

Earlier this month, Cherokee County Undersheriff Jason Chennault said Richardson told investigators the gun she used to kill Potts was later stolen from her.

The human remains discovered on Richardson’s property were sent to the state medical examiner’s office for a determination into the cause and manner of death, and for a positive identification.

Chennault said the remains were badly decomposed, and investigators at the scene could not determine possible injuries or methods that might have been used to inflict any wounds. A call to the state medical examiner’s office for an update on the case was not returned as of press time Thursday.

Potts was reported missing by his sister just more than a month before the discovery of the human remains.

Richardson was picked up by Tahlequah police on unrelated warrants. During an interview the following day, she allegedly confessed to shooting Potts.
