Jewell Horne, earlier charged with embezzlement from the town of Webbers Falls, has resigned as mayor.
Her letter said her resignation was effective at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 31, although it wasn’t signed until almost 5 p.m. Monday.
Horne has been ordered to appear at 10 a.m. Feb. 16 in Muskogee County District Court for her preliminary hearing on 15 felony counts of embezzlement by a public officer.
Horne, 76, is charged for allegedly having illegally accepted $229,460 as salary for her positions as mayor and trustee of Webbers Falls.
Horne could not be reached for comment.
