A Disabled American Veterans van en route to a Christmas Party was knocked on its side after being hit at the intersection of 40th Street and West Okmulgee Avenue around 9:30 a.m. Friday.
Several passengers in the van were transported to Muskogee Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Apples, oranges and bananas spilled from broken plastic containers as crews with Muskogee Police and Muskogee County Emergency Medical Service worked the scene. Nurses and nurses’ aides with Sequoyah Hospice of McAlester, who were at the intersection, helped distribute plastic gloves and treat the patients.
Jennifer Poston, hospital service coordinator with the DAV, said the Ford van was going south on 40th across Okmulgee when a blue pickup, going west, ran a red light and hit it. Poston, who was following the van in a car, said DAV volunteer Bill Giles was driving the van. She said the DAV was going to a veterans center in Talihina for a Christmas party.
