Bank worker arrested

A bank employee was arrested after admitting to a robbery in Keys, and a warrant has been issued for his alleged accomplice, according to a media release.

James Hughart was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center on a complaint of armed robbery.

A warrant was issued Wednesday for Joshua Toney. Hughart told investigators Toney lives in the Porum area in Muskogee County and drives a green Chevrolet Nova with body damage.

Hughart admitted that he planned the armed robbery that took place around 6 p.m. Monday, the release states.

Hughart said Toney acted as the armed robber. Toney entered the bank through a back door that Hughart opened for him. Toney then allegedly threatened Hughart and two female employees with a handgun and made them wait in a restroom while he took more than $30,000 from the bank’s cash drawers, said Jason Chennault, Cherokee County undersheriff, in the release.

Hughart admitted he and Toney divided the money stolen, Chennault said.

After surveillance video was reviewed Tuesday, sheriff’s investigators and FBI agents noticed Hughart acting strangely in the minutes before the armed robbery, the release continued. When interviewed, Hughart said he planned the robbery and that he and Toney divided the money.

Officials recovered Hughart’s portion of the money in his pickup. The clothes Toney wore, a pair of black Carhartt overalls and a black and gray sweatshirt with a hood, and the gun, a .22-caliber revolver, were recovered at Hughart's grandparents' home south of Keys.

Hughart’s grandfather told officers that Toney was at his home Monday evening and later returned with Hughart, Chennault said.
