After nearly three years as CEO of Muskogee Regional Medical Center, Steve Mahan has resigned, a hospital official said.
Capella Healthcare named Mahan as CEO in 2007. He is resigning to pursue other opportunities in health care related fields, said Kathy Hewitt, chairman of the MRMC board.
“He’s going to get closer to his family — back to Alabama,” Hewitt said. “It’s been kind of a stretch being that far away.”
Mahan could not be reached for comment.
Robert Hammond, president of Capella’s Continental Division, will serve as interim CEO, Hewitt said. The board of directors will immediately begin a search for someone to permanently fill the position.
Hammond said the board hopes to have the position filled by early 2010.
In a media release, hospital officials stated that during his tenure at MRMC, Mahan has overseen a number of successful initiatives.
The initiatives include:
• The introduction of new service lines, such as interventional cardiology;
• The recruitment of more than 15 physicians; and,
• The investment in IT and equipment that will increase MRMC's capabilities, especially in oncology and diagnostic imaging.
“There is never a good time to make this transition, but I'm tremendously proud of all that we've accomplished here at Muskogee Regional in the past few years,” Mahan is quoted in the release.
“I am confident in the leadership team that will carry the hospital forward. Above all, I am thankful to the staff of MRMC, to the Board, to the medical staff and the community for making Muskogee home for me.”
The media release states that Hammond has 30 years of health care operating experience, having led hospitals in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Washington, Oregon, Alabama and Oklahoma.
