Meth lab found, renter sought

By Donna Hales

Four meth labs were found in a mobile home at 628 S. B St. Tuesday that showed evidence children lived in the home, police said.

“There was evidence of children in the house — we don’t know how many,” said Police Lt. Andy Simmons, head of the Special Investigation Unit. “There was a child’s bedroom in the house, and meth lab components and hazardous chemicals and acids within an arm’s reach. We found toys and a toddler bed.”

A plastic jumping horse and a trampoline were in the yard.

The landlord came to the site to work on a heater Tuesday morning and noticed what he thought were components of a meth lab. He notified police about 10:45 a.m., Simmons said.

“Burners on the (cook) stove were on, but no one was in the home,” Simmons said.

Marijuana and finished product of methamphetamine and uncapped hypodermic needles were in sight, police said.

“The owner (tenant) hasn’t showed up,” Simmons said late Tuesday afternoon.

He added that the landlord did not return to the site after notifying police.

“Who lives here is under investigation,” Simmons said.

Simmons called the federal Drug Enforcement Administration to send in a hazmat cleanup team.

Robert Adair, special operations officer with the Muskogee Fire Department, had his hazmat team check air quality in the home but did not make entry until the home had time to air out somewhat.
