Muskogee recycles

By Liz McMahan

Francie Martin, who heads the city’s recycling program, says she has no question about it — Muskogee residents are recycling more and especially more plastic.

“I can see by the stuff being brought in and by how often we have to have our containers emptied,” Martin said.

To encourage Muskogee residents to recycle even more, Mayor John Tyler Hammons has declared Saturday as Muskogee Recycles Day. America Recycles Day is Sunday, but the city’s recycling center is closed that day, Hammons said.

In addition to encouraging people to take recyclables to the center, the city also is holding a free dump day for city residents Saturday. Those who can show a valid driver’s license and a current city water bill will not be charged to unload at the Muskogee Community Landfill.

The city’s limb and brush drop off at 40th and Denver streets also will be open.

Martin said the biggest increase at the recycling center has been in plastic bottles. Two kinds of bottles are accepted — No. 1s and No. 2s.

To tell the difference, look for a number on the bottom of plastic bottles in a triangle of arrows, Martin said. Or, remember that a bottle is defined as containers with bases larger than the tops.

No. 1 bottles basically are water, soda or hand sanitizer bottles, Martin said. No. 2s are milk jugs, laundry soap jugs and some hand creams.

Containers such as butter tubs are not accepted at this time.

J.W. Gilford, one of the Incor workers who operates the center, said he also has noticed an increase in the amount of goods the center gets.

He said he appreciates those using the center separating the kinds of goods — the different types of plastics and the different colors of glass.

He said he is glad to unload recyclables for customers, that they don’t even have to get out of their vehicles to drop goods off.
