Wrong-way crash kills two

Two people died and three were injured after a driver traveling in the wrong lanes of the Muskogee Turnpike hit two other vehicles, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report.

Jordan Leland, 22, of Tulsa was pronounced dead at the scene. Gary Wray, 35, of Coweta was pronounced dead at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, the report states.

Sonya Gibson, 47, and Lewis Gibson, 51, both of Muskogee, were treated at Muskogee Regional Medical Center and released. Dylan Wray, 12, son of Gary Wray, was treated at St. John and released, according to the trooper’s report.

The collisions happened at approximately 9:10 p.m. Friday at mile marker 7 in Wagoner County. The report says Leland was driving a 1997 Ford pickup northbound in the southbound lanes when he struck the side of a 2005 Nissan driven by Sonya Gibson. The Nissan ran off the road and caught fire. Leland continued southbound and struck the 2007 Toyota pickup head-on that Gary Wray was driving. Leland’s vehicle spun into the center wall of the turnpike, coming to rest partially on the wall and caught fire. Wray was pinned for approximately 45 minutes before he was freed by Broken Arrow EMS. Leland was pinned for an unknown amount of time.

All of the vehicles were equipped with seat belts. Troopers determined Wray and his son were wearing seat belts, but did not know if Leland or Sonya and Lewis Gibson were wearing theirs.

All three vehicles were equipped with airbags, which did deploy in the Nissan and the pickup Wray was driving. Troopers did not know if Leland’s vehicle’s airbags deployed, the report said.
