MARTIN — A Porum woman was pulled from flood waters Friday morning two miles west of U.S. 64.

Sheryl Williams’ car was washed off a low-water bridge and then became stranded in a swollen creek caused by heavy overnight rainfall.

Ken Long, assistant chief of the Warner Police Department, said the call came in shortly before 10 a.m.

“When we got there, the lady was calling out ‘Help me! Help me!’” he said. “She was sitting on the edge of the driver’s side window.”

Employees from the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Department, Muskogee County Emergency Medical Service, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the Creek Nation Tribal Police, and the Keefeton Volunteer Fire Department took part in retrieving Williams from the muddy water.

Long said the rescue happened quickly when everyone pitched in to help.

“I pulled a flotation device out of my trunk, and Fred Winters with the Muskogee County Sheriff furnished a lariat rope,” he said. “We jumped the fence and threw the rope out to her. She pulled it over her head and under her armpits. I threw her the flotation device and she put her arms through the loops on it and held onto the rope.”

Chief Jack Shackelford with the Creek Nation Tribal Police said Williams’ situation was very serious when he arrived.

“The car was half submerged, and the front end was submerged up to the bottom of the windshield,” he said. “When I stepped into the water it came up to my chest.”

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Gary Isbell and Trooper Randy Cox, Shackelford and Ken Long each got hold of the rope.

“Once we got our hands on the rope, I told everyone to pull as hard as they could,” Shackelford said. “She went under a few times and may have swallowed some water, but her only complaint when we got her out was that she felt cold.”

Muskogee County EMS took Williams to Muskogee Regional Medical Center with symptoms of hypothermia. A spokeswoman for MRMC reported that Williams was treated and released.
