Longtime Wagoner County roper Larry Gene Jones, 61, died when a horse threw him Friday, said Wagoner County Sheriff Bob Colbert.
Jones, who works with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, was roping with friends at the home of Clay Myers, off Three Rivers Road, about one mile southeast of Okay.
Friends at the scene started CPR immediately, but he never rallied, Colbert said.
“He had obvious head trauma,” Colbert said.
“He loved roping — has been a professional roper for years. That was his passion, and he died doing it.”
Jones' body was transferred to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Tulsa by Shipman Funeral Home, Colbert said.
The accident occurred about 1 p.m. Friday, the sheriff said.
