Program offers help to weatherize homes

Many Muskogee residents can reduce heating bills this winter with the help of the Weatherization Assistance Program.

The Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program provides energy efficiency services to low-income families, with priority given to the elderly, persons with disabilities, and families with children. Weatherization reduces energy costs for these households by increasing the energy efficiency of their homes, while ensuring their health and safety.

Weatherization crews use computerized energy audits and advanced diagnostic equipment, such as a blower door, to determine the most cost-effective measures appropriate for each home. Typical measures include: attic insulation, caulking, weather-stripping, CFL light bulbs, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

After the weatherization work is complete, many households experience energy savings of up to $300 per year, or more. In addition, the measures installed improve the comfort and safety of the home. These measures continue to save energy and money year after year, providing a long-term solution to high energy bills for low-income families.

Households meeting the income eligibility requirements can apply for services at Muskogee County Community Action Foundation, Inc. Because of the high demand for assistance, applicants may be put on a waiting list.
