Man shot in conflict over hay bales

Okay man in custody, suspected of shooting neighbor

— OKAY – Wagoner County Sheriff Bob Colbert said an Okay man is in custody after an argument over hay bales turned bloody.

Colbert said Donald Dickenson was arrested for allegedly shooting his neighbor, whose name was not released, during an argument Tuesday night at 8316 N. 40th St. E.

“(The neighbor) backed his pickup all the way across a pasture, crashed his pickup into something and then went to his house, according to witnesses,” Colbert said.

Colbert said the injured man had been shot in the mid-torso area by a handgun deputies retrieved from the house where the argument took place. Colbert said the injured man went to Dickenson’s house, allegedly with a shovel, and confronted him about the hay bales.

The injured man then drove himself home, Colbert said, before driving to the Okay Fire Department and telling firefighters he had been shot.

The injured man was able to tell emergency personnel the name of the man who shot him, Okay Police Chief Fred Winters said.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., the man was flown to a Tulsa hospital.

Colbert described the man’s injuries as “serious to critical,” saying there were multiple wounds.

“We’re not sure how many times he was shot,” Colbert said. “It could be one bullet that entered and exited multiple times.”

Residents filled nearby parking lots. Traffic was blocked on Oklahoma 16. Streets surrounding the Okay Fire Department also were blocked. The pickup the injured man drove remained in the fire department’s driveway with the driver’s door open.

Colbert said the argument over hay baled Tuesday began that evening.

“The sad thing is, I was driving over here and thinking, we’re going to see more of this,” Colbert said. “With the way things are, with as hot as it is and with no rain, there’s just no hay to buy. And what you can buy isn’t good hay. We look for this to be an ongoing problem.”
