<font color=green>P.M. UPDATE: </font>Muskogee earns Tree City USA recognition

OKLAHOMA CITY — Representatives of the City of Muskogee received a special Tree City USA honor at the state capitol in Oklahoma City this week.

Muskogee has participated in the Tree City USA program for 22 years. Muskogee is among 23 cities, two Air Force bases and five public utilities that have been designated as a Tree City USA community or Tree Line USA utility in Oklahoma this year.

To earn Tree City USA status from The National Arbor Day Foundation, a city must establish a tree board, create a tree ordinance, spend $2 per capita annually on taking care of the city's trees and celebrate Arbor Day with an official proclamation and citywide observations.

Tree care efforts included planting and maintaining trees throughout the year and distributing educational material about trees to the public. Almost 1,900 trees were distributed in partnership with The Tree Bank Foundation of Oklahoma and the Apache Foundation.
