‘Hire a Hero, Hire a Vet Workshop’ scheduled


The Veterans Workforce Investment Program in partnership with East Central University, are sponsoring a free one-hour “Hire a Hero, Hire a Vet Workshop,” for area business owners, managers and human resource directors.

Dr. Guy Sewell, professor of Environmental Health Sciences from East Central University will educate attendees on the certifications currently available to veterans, and how employers can benefit from hiring skilled military veterans in their workplace.

The workshop will be held from 11 a.m. to noon March 30 at Workforce Oklahoma, 717 S. 32nd St., to see if there is local interest in this program.

Veterans who complete this free program can earn up to five green energy job certificates in the following areas:

• Weatherization and Blower Door Use Certification: Prepares students for technical positions with HVAC contractors and energy efficiency agencies.

• Infrared Science Use and Analysis Certification: Prepares students for technical positions in the remodeling and energy conservation areas.

• Water & Wastewater Class D License: Prepares students for entry-level positions in municipal fresh water and waste water systems.

• Solar Energy System Certification: Prepares students for entry-level positions in the renewable energy and green construction industries.

• Basic Environmental Science: Hazardous waste and environmental problems, energy and resource conservation, toxicology and environmental health topics.

• Certificate training is provided under the direction of East Central University’s Institute for Environmental Science Education and Research.

Tax credits are available for businesses employing military veterans.

The Veterans Workforce Investment Program is a competitive grant program offered by the Veterans Employment and Training Services of the U.S. Department of Labor.

VWIP-funded programs are intended to meet the workforce investment needs of the veterans and to perform outreach and public information activities to develop and promote employment and job training opportunities in the green job industry.
