TAHLEQUAH — Home energy audits are available by appointment through Cherokee Nation Environmental Programs to citizens who are homeowners within the tribe’s 14-county jurisdiction.
The Home Energy Audit Program is an effort to reduce energy waste, save homeowners money in energy costs and improving the comfort level of their homes. Participating homeowners also will be given suggestions on how to remedy any energy losses discovered during the audit. Audits usually take about two hours, and the average homeowner who follows the energy efficiency suggestions from the audit stands to save as much as $350 per year and may extend the life of their heater and air conditioner.
All Cherokee Nation citizens who own their own home and live within the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation are eligible for the program. Priority will be given to elders, the disabled, households with children under 6 years of age, homes built before 1980 and veterans. There is no cost for the service.
