Boynton city hall locked up

— BOYNTON — There were no public records to be had Wednesday from Boynton City Hall — top officials closed it down.

Mayor Marie Wilson, who refused to give out public records Tuesday, had said the town clerk would be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday to make the requested documents available.

But Boynton Town Clerk Tiffany Ledbetter said the mayor instructed her Wednesday to lock the door at City Hall and leave.

The clerk said the mayor told her City Hall would be closed for the rest of the week, per Dr. Melvin Easley, the town administrator.

Ledbetter said she was so surprised at the closing that she forgot to put a sign on the door. When she told Wilson about the sign, the mayor decided not to put the sign on the door, Ledbetter said.

It was later decided Ledbetter would go to the office and get the rest of the town water bills out, but the office would not be open.

Wilson said Tuesday that Easley, who lives in Tulsa County, would be at Boynton City Hall on Wednesday to answer questions about his salary and duties.

Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Moore said his office is having trouble receiving public records from the town.

“We have requested certain council meeting minutes and understand the mayor took those meeting records, that some have been returned and others have been lost or may no longer exist,” Moore said.

City Hall earlier been scheduled to be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.

A new sign on the south entrance of City Hall Wednesday states hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Another new sign on the door said “No Loitering.”

A smaller sign said Boynton Public Works Authority is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The north entrance to City Hall also was locked Wednesday. No police officer responded to knocks on the door, although an officer had entered the door only minutes earlier. Two patrol units were parked outside.

Boynton Police Chief George Ezell said the police department has been in existence for three weeks and offices are inside the back entrance to City Hall. If City Hall isn’t open, the door remains locked.

City Hall is to be closed Monday for Labor Day, so those wishing to pay water bills cannot do so at Boynton Public Works Authority until Sept. 7, Ledbetter confirmed.
