Gun theft sends man to federal prison

— A Hulbert man was sentenced Wednesday in federal court on a conspiracy charge, according to a media release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Darren Glen Howard, 21, was sentenced to 41 months in prison.

The charge arose from an investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Howard was indicted in August with Timothy William Hess, 43, of Tahlequah. Hess pleaded guilty to the same charge in January.

The investigation revealed that on or about Oct. 25, 2011, Howard went to Remington Valley Storage Units in Tahlequah and proceeded to cut off the lock of a storage unit and removed a gun safe containing firearms. Hess came into possession of those guns sometime later and sold them to a confidential informant.
