P.M. UPDATE: Sallisaw man sentenced to federal prison
A Sallisaw man was sentenced Friday to 12 months and one day in prison to be followed by 24 months of supervised release for making false statements, according to Sheldon J. Sperling, U.S. attorney.
Daniel Greg Gibson, 51, will also pay $33,986.39 in restitution.
The charges arose from an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Labor-Management Standards. Gibson pleaded guilty in March.
The Department of Labor initiated an audit of the labor union’s financial documents. During that audit it became evident that a large number of checks were written to various credit card companies over a period of seven years, despite the fact that the union had no credit cards. In 2008, in response to a compliance audit, Gibson, president of the local chapter of the AFGE union, presented two falsified receipts in an attempt to justify some of the unauthorized expenses. The unauthorized expenses totaled approximately $35,000.
Gibson was ordered to report to the Bureau of Prisons on Aug. 17.
