Slag from a steel roof fell onto debris and caused a smoky fire in a vacant building at the Frontier Terminal, 4511 Callery Road on Monday afternoon.
Assistant Muskogee Fire Chief Wayne Shiew said firefighters responded to the call at about 2:45 p.m. Monday and remained on the scene for about an hour. Three pumper units and a ladder truck responded.
Shiew said the building was being torn down. Earlier on Monday, demolition workers had been cutting steel beams with a cutting torch, but left around 1 p.m., he said. There were no workers on the scene at the time of the fire, he said.
The property is owned by Cummins Investments, he said.
“It looked like the insides burned,” Shiew said.
