Area Masons tout full participation in vision program

For more than 23 years, the Masonic Charities Foundation of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Masons and Prevent Blindness Oklahoma (PBO) have worked hand-in-hand to provide free vision screenings to the children and families of Oklahoma. The Trinity Masonic Lodge #502 from Muskogee, Porum Masonic Lodge #351, and Webbers Falls Masonic Lodge #14 had 100 percent attendance and participation the Partners in Prevention program for the 2008-2009 school year.



The Masonic Charities Foundations provided $100,000 last year while 193 local lodges furnished volunteers to help with the screenings. Prevent Blindness Oklahoma provides certified screeners who travel all 77 counties to screen children in day care centers, preschools, Head Start Centers, and public and private schools.

During the 2008-2009 school year PBO staff screened 251,293 children and referred 25,931 for a comprehensive eye exam. Prevent Blindness Oklahoma also provides vouchers for free exams and glasses to qualifying families through their Vision Service Plan benefit program. The Masonic Charities Foundation has contributed over $2.5 million to this program through the years.

This fall Prevent Blindness will begin its 44th year of vision screening.
