<font color = green>P.M. UPDATE:</font> NSU’s Buckley crowned Miss NASA

TAHLEQUAH — The Northeastern State University Native American Student Association crowned Mallory Lorene Buckley (Muscogee/Choctaw) as the 2009 Miss NASA at a pageant held at NSU.

Buckley, a Tulsa sophomore, is majoring in American Indian Studies. Her parents are Laverne Buckley and the late Kozy Buckley Jr.

“The purpose of NASA is to enlighten the NSU Campus and public in regard to the community involvement and volunteer work of NASA, and to promote a better understanding of the Native American people and students of Northeastern State University,” said Sedelta Oosahwee, student program coordinator for the Center of Tribal Studies.

The other contestants in the Miss NASA pageant included Courtney Teehee (Cherokee), Jay; Alyssa Allen-Fields (Cherokee/Navajo), Locust Grove; Gyspi Gover (Pawnee), Winslow, Ariz.; and Kaylyn Handshy (Ponca/Blackfeet/Cherokee/Creek), Stilwell.

NASA students are involved with the organization of the NSU Symposium on the American Indian, as well as Diversity Week, Homecoming and American Indian Heritage Awareness Month.

“Miss NASA represents NASA at university functions, in the Native community and works to promote her platform throughout the year,” Oosahwee said.
