Tulsa Opera will present an “Opera for the Young” adaptation of Engelbert Humperdinck’s classic, Hansel and Gretel, at 2 p.m. today at Sadler Arts Academy, 800 Altamont St.
A chorus of students from Sadler will appear on-stage, performing right alongside Tulsa Opera’s professional artists. The students will be featured as the Ragamuffin Children, Pixies and Gingerbread Children.
Sadler will have a “Dress Like Hansel or Gretel Day” today in honor of the performance. The “Best Hansel” and “Best Gretel” will be chosen by a group of impartial judges.
Students at every grade level have been reading fairy tales from the Sadler library’s extensive collection, in preparation for the opera. The fairy tale Hansel and Gretel teaches children about courage, love and the triumph of good over evil as a brave sister and brother outwit a mean witch in Engelbert Humperdinck’s masterpiece.
There will be no admission charge, and the public is invited.
