BREAKING NEWS: Fire causes evacuation of homes

People living in the vicinity of Sally Brown and Country Club roads were being asked to evacuate their homes Wednesday evening because of possible toxic fumes.

A roofing company had tried a controlled burn of dumped shingles, and the Environmental Protection Agency and state Department of Environmental Quality were trying to determine what chemical residue might be involved, a sheriff’s dispatcher said about 7 p.m.

Most of Country Club near Smith Ferry was blocked off by law enforcement.

“We’ve got a fire out here,” Muskogee County Sheriff Charles Pearson said at 7:30 p.m. “It started yesterday, and we put it out. It started up again, and it involves all kinds of chemicals. There are a large amount of shingles dumped by Miller Roofing — years’ worth.”
