Boral Bricks and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 4042 are teaming up for a charity golf tournament and Calcutta to benefit diabetes research.
“If you are not familiar with (a Calcutta), basically all the “A” players are auctioned off,” Boral Bricks plant manager Shawn Kirk, wrote in an e-mail. “Then, once the teams are drawn, the team is auctioned off. If you buy the team that wins you win cash.”
Kirk said the golf tournament is set for Nov. 9 at Pecan Valley in Fort Gibson.
“It is nine holes, blind draw two-person teams,” Kirk wrote. “‘A’ players draw a ‘B’ player teammate.”
Kirk said funds will help two diabetes charities.
“The money raised will be spilt between the FOE Diabetes Fund and the Boral Bricks Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation,” he wrote. “As a side note, I think last year Boral Limited donated nearly $1 million to JDRF, and the Muskogee chapter of FOE raised more dollars for the FOE Diabetes fund than any other chapter in the state.”
Aerie 4042 Secretary Robert Christophersen said the FOE picked diabetes as a charity because it affects so many people.
“Diabetes research is so important because when you look at diabetes nationwide I would say probably 65 or 70 percent of the people in the United States probably have diabetes in one form or another,” he said.
Christophersen said Eagles all across the U.S. are working hard to help cure diabetes.
“At our last national convention, we got with the University of Iowa to help fund an entire floor at the university dedicated to researching and curing diabetes,” he said. “Our part of that is that we’ve got to try and raise $5 million each year for the next five years.”
Christophersen said the FOE is so involved in charitable work because of it’s focus on practicing the motto “People helping people.”
“We’re going to help somebody in this world, even if it’s someone we never meet,” he said. “We do this for all our different charities, and it’s to try to do something to eliminate the problems that we have as far as the diseases.”
